Victorian children send the most letters to Santa

Wednesday, 14 November 2007

Children in Victoria write more letters to Santa than in any other state of Australia, according to Christmas mail statistics collated by Australia Post.

“Australian children sent more than 100,000 letters to Santa last year and Victorian children were the most active, writing 45,000 letters last year,” said Nadine Lyford, State Communications Manager, Australia Post.

This year Australia Post expects to deliver a record number of letters to Santa. Santa and his helpers are urging kids to start sending their Santa letters to the North Pole now, in plenty of time for Christmas.

“Children can be a big help to Santa by correctly addressing their letters and posting them early so Santa has plenty of time to reply,” Ms Lyford said.

Children should address their Santa letters to:

Santa
NORTH POLE 9999

Children need to make sure their letter has a 50 cent stamp and that they also write their name and address clearly on the back of the envelope, so Santa can write back!

Letters to Santa can be posted in any street posting box or at a local Australia Post outlet.

Australia Post has designed colourful Christmas-themed Santa Mail letterhead, along with some handy hints for how to write to Santa. These can be downloaded from www.auspost.com.au/education.

Kids can also access a fun interactive Santa on the site. A Santa Letter Writing Kit is also available from selected Australia Post retail outlets for $9.95.

Writing to Santa: Some Handy Hints

1.   First, think about what you want to say to Santa. Make a quick list of all the things you want to say in your letter on a piece of paper.
2. The next step is to write a letter including a heading, a greeting (ie. Dear Santa or Hi Santa!), a closing (ie. Your good friend…) and your signature. Once you’ve finished, read it out loud or ask an adult to read it for you.
3. If you have access to the internet you can print out special Santa Mail letterhead from the Australia Post education web site: www.auspost.com.au/education. With your best pen, carefully write your letter to Santa.
4.

Remember to include your address on the back of the envelope when writing to Santa, otherwise he won’t be able to reply to you!  Eg:

Jack Taylor
415 Shaw Street
RICHMOND  VIC  3121

It is very important to address your envelope correctly, so the Postie knows where to deliver it. Always double check to make sure the address is current and correct.

5.

Your letter to Santa should be addressed to:

Santa
NORTH POLE 9999

6. Now you’re ready to post your letter. Make sure you put a 50 cent stamp in the top right corner of the envelope. You can post the letter in any Australia Post street posting box, or at your local post office.
7. And don’t forget to get in early! Santa receives mail from children all over the world so make sure you get your letter to him in plenty of time before Christmas.
