Australia Post’s latest stamp issue is guaranteed to cause a splash amongst the nation’s sports fans, with the release of a 50 cent stamp featuring the event logo for the 12th FINA World Championships.
Approximately 2,000 athletes from 175 countries will descend upon Melbourne from 17 March until 1 April 2007 to compete in five different aquatic disciplines: swimming, open water swimming, diving, water polo and synchronised swimming.
“Australia is renowned for producing fantastic sporting events and great swimmers, and the 12th FINA World Championships is a great opportunity for Australia Post to celebrate both of these things on one stamp”, said Australia Post, Group Manager Philatelic, Mr Noel Leahy.
The colourful stamp features the official pink and blue event logo, with a joyous swimmer leaping out of the water in celebration surrounded by a star burst. It is anticipated that 12,000 interstate and international visitors will attend the event, while a global television audience of 1 billion people will also tune in.
“All the swimmers have been building towards this event for a long time and with Australia Post releasing this stamp issue, it just helps build the excitement and anticipation leading into the event,” exclaimed Australian butterfly swimmer, Jessicah Schipper, who has won two gold, one silver and one bronze in two previous FINA World Championships.
“The Corporation is delighted that Australia Post has recognised the significance of the World Championships with this special stamp issue,” proclaimed Mr Tony Beddison, Chairman, 2007 World Swimming Championships Corporation.
The stamps are available from participating Australia Post outlets while stocks last, in various collectible formats including an Affixed First Day Cover ($0.80), collectible Stamp Pack with 10 stamps and event information ($5.45) and maxicard ($1.25).
